Black 2 Reality

Meta needed to authentically engage Black VR developers and creators while demonstrating the platform's potential for inclusive virtual experiences. The challenge was creating an event that felt genuine to the Black developer community while showcasing cutting-edge VR technology in a way that was accessible to both VR enthusiasts and newcomers.

The Problem: How do you create an inclusive virtual reality experience that serves as both community building and product demonstration, while avoiding the performative diversity events that tech audiences rightfully critique?

Pioneering Hybrid Virtual Experiences

This was the first major diversity-focused event held entirely in virtual reality, requiring us to invent new models for audience engagement, speaker management, and community building in virtual spaces.

Community-Centered Approach

Rather than positioning this as a Meta marketing event, I designed it as a community celebration that happened to be powered by Meta's technology. The distinction was crucial for authentic engagement with developer audiences who are naturally skeptical of corporate messaging.

Technology as Experience, Not Barrier

The event needed to work for attendees regardless of their VR experience level, requiring careful balance between showcasing advanced capabilities and maintaining accessibility.

Virtual Environment Design

Platform: Horizon Worlds custom environment Design Philosophy: Created immersive virtual spaces that celebrated Black culture while demonstrating VR's potential for authentic community building.

Key Virtual Spaces:

  • Main Stage: Central presentation area for keynotes and panels
  • Networking Lounges: Smaller spaces for intimate conversations
  • Experience Showcases: Interactive demos of Black-created VR content
  • After-Party Space: Social area with virtual DJ and casual networking

Multi-Platform Broadcasting Strategy

This hybrid approach ensured maximum inclusion while maintaining the innovative VR-first experience.
